Customs clearance at Miami International Airport

MIA files under CBP port code 5206. It is a separate port of entry from PortMiami, which is 5201, and the difference is not academic: an entry filed against the wrong one is a correction nobody needed. MIA is the busiest US airport for international freight, and air cargo runs on a clock that leaves no room to prepare paperwork after arrival.

Air is a different clock, not just a faster boat

Ocean freight gives you days between departure and arrival. Air can give you hours. A shipment can leave Bogota in the evening and be on the ground at MIA before the office opens, which means the entry has to be ready before the aircraft moves, not after it lands.

In practice that changes what we need from you and when. Send the airway bill and the commercial invoice at booking. If we are waiting on documents while the freight is already on a ramp, the airline's storage clock is running and it runs faster than a terminal's.

Perishables, pharmaceuticals and the agencies that own them

A large share of what arrives at MIA is flowers, fresh produce, seafood and pharmaceuticals, and those are governed by agencies other than CBP. FDA prior notice, USDA and APHIS requirements, and in some cases a hold placed by an agency that has nothing to do with customs at all.

We file the partner agency paperwork with the entry rather than after it. On a perishable air shipment that ordering is the whole game: a consignment released by CBP and held by FDA is still a consignment sitting in a cooler at your expense.

5206 and 5201 are not interchangeable

Both sit in CBP district 52 and both are in Miami, which is exactly why people conflate them. They are separate ports of entry with separate codes, and your entry names one of them. If your company imports by both air and ocean into Miami, you are filing under two port codes, and your records should reflect that.

FAQ

What is the CBP port code for Miami International Airport?

5206. PortMiami, the seaport, is 5201. They are both in CBP district 52 and both in Miami, but they are separate ports of entry and an entry names one of them.

How fast can you clear an air shipment at MIA?

If the entry is ready before arrival, release can follow very quickly after the flight lands. The constraint is almost never our filing speed, it is whether the documents existed in time. Send the airway bill at booking rather than at arrival.

Do you handle FDA regulated and perishable air freight?

Yes, and we file the agency paperwork with the entry rather than after it. Prior notice for food, and USDA or APHIS requirements for plants and produce, are a large part of what comes through this airport.

Can you clear MIA freight if we are not in Miami?

Yes. Under the national permit a licensed customs broker files in any US district through ACE. We file at 5206 every working day, in English and Spanish, under filer code EWV.

Send the airway bill before the flight

Air freight punishes late paperwork more than ocean does. Send the airway bill and the invoice at booking and we will tell you what the entry needs and which agencies are involved.

A few lines is enough. A licensed customs broker reads every message, and a half-filled form is a completely normal way to start.
